The international croquet community is mourning the loss of Geoff Young, a revered figure in the sport, who passed away on December 21, 2024. Young, inducted into the World Croquet Federation (WCF) Hall of Fame in 2022, leaves behind an enduring legacy of excellence, leadership, and service to the game he cherished.
Young’s journey in croquet began in 1984 at the Morrinsville Croquet Club in New Zealand’s Thames Valley. Over four decades, he transformed his passion for the sport into a lifetime of contributions at club, regional, national, and international levels.
A Life of Dedication
At the Morrinsville Croquet Club, Young’s influence was profound. He served as treasurer for a decade and was an unwavering advocate for player development. His leadership extended to the Thames Valley Croquet Association, where he held nearly every major role, from president to selector. Notably, he spearheaded the establishment of competitive leagues like the Midland League and the Northern Region’s UNITE competition, providing platforms for players to thrive.
On a national scale, Young’s administrative acumen shone. He joined Croquet New Zealand’s Finance Committee in 1989, served on its Executive Council from 1993 to 1997, and held the presidency from 1997 to 1999. His influence shaped key policies and helped modernize the sport's administration, including his instrumental role in developing Croquet New Zealand's current constitution.
In recognition of his tireless contributions, Young was named a Life Member of Croquet New Zealand in 2019.
An Accomplished Competitor
Young’s prowess extended beyond administration to on-court achievements. Partnering with his wife, Phyllis, and daughter, Dallas Cooke, he claimed several national doubles titles, including two mixed doubles championships.
Global Impact
Young’s dedication to croquet transcended borders. He served on the WCF Management Committee for eight years, from 2014 to 2021, and managed several international tournaments, including the 2015 WCF Golf Croquet World Championship and the 2023 Under 21 WCF GC World Championship.
A Lasting Legacy
In 2022, Young’s extraordinary contributions earned him a place in the WCF Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to his lifetime of service. His welcoming spirit, distinguished walk, and sportsmanship made him a beloved figure in the croquet community. Geoff and Phyllis were known for their hospitality, often opening their Morrinsville home and Mt. Maunganui beach house to visitors.
Young is survived by his wife, Phyllis, daughter Dallas Cooke, her husband Keith, and their daughter Ashley. His passing leaves a profound void, but his legacy will continue to inspire players and administrators for generations to come.
The croquet world has lost a true champion, but his contributions to the sport will remain a beacon of dedication and excellence.
