A treasured spring tradition returns as St. John’s College and the U.S. Naval Academy prepare to face off in the 41st Annapolis Cup, presented by PNC, on Saturday, April 5, 2025. First held in 1983, the annual croquet match has become a spring fixture in Annapolis. According to campus lore, the rivalry began in 1982 when a St. John’s freshman suggested croquet as a sport the Midshipmen might not dominate.

The Annapolis Cup rivalry between the Johnnies of St. John's College and the midshipmen of the U.S. Naval Academy, is set to return on April 15, 2023. The nine-wicket test began in 1982 but was forced to take a two-year hiatus in 2020 and 2021. Last year the Naval Academy hosted got the win to end a five-year win streak for the Johnnies.
